Forgotten Monastery of the Gold Rush Mountains | Khasung Choling
The Khasung Choling Gumba of Phoksundo is a ‘Bon’ Buddhist Shrine. Believed to be more that 500 years old, the monastery is located besides the beautiful Phoksundo Lake. While the lake is the most prized fortune for trekkers, a collection of buildings, small stupas and relics of Khasung Choling are worthy of a visit.
For travelers it is place to listen to famous folklores of the region. However, the monastery is in dismal condition. Its buildings are destroying and the monks live in difficulties. Dolpa’s dependence on ‘Yarshagumba’ (popularly refered to as Himalayan Gold) is taking the locals’ attention away from tourism, although it has prospects to bloom.
The Khasung Cholung Gumba might just be one of the examples of the forgotten monastery of the the Gold Rush Mountains.
